Authorities say that three cars collided Sunday in Elk Grove, California, leaving four people dead, and injured as many as seven others. The multi-car wreck was reported around 3:40 Sunday afternoon on northbound Interstate 5. A sergeant with the California Highway Patrol says that a southbound Ford Expedition crossed over into the northbound lanes before slamming into two other vehicles.
Police say that the Expedition slammed into a Honda Accord and a Toyota Rav4. Nine people were in the Ford when it suddenly veered across southbound lanes, eventually rolling into northbound traffic. A man who was in the Rav4 says that there was no way he could avoid the crash, according to CBS Sacramento. He and a passenger in the Toyota were able to walk away from the accident.
Three people in the Ford Expedition and the driver of the Honda Accord were killed in the I-5 accident. Six people in the Expedition and a woman who was a passenger in the Honda suffered injuries. Authorities say that the woman who had been riding in the Honda was critically injured. Authorities say that the seven people who were injured are expected to make recoveries.
The CHP is investigation the three car crash. Initial indications have law enforcement questioning what may have caused the tragic accident. A CHP sergeant says that no witnesses reported any reckless driving before the Ford veered off just before the fatal collision.
Police say that it does not appear that alcohol or equipment failure led to the wreck at this point in the investigation, according to News 10. However, police have not ruled out mechanical failure, according to the Stockton Record. The CHP has brought in an investigation team to look into the crash.
